When You Should Choose Denture Repair vs. Replacement
Denture repair is a common need for patients who wear partial or full dentures. While these oral appliances are strong, they are prone to breaking because of their delicacy. When a break occurs, it can be hard to know whether a denture repair can take place or if a complete replacement is necessary. Thankfully, patients can talk with a dentist to determine which course of action is most appropriate.
Denture repair vs. replacement
Outlined below is an overview of denture repair, as well as how the replacement process works. Being aware of how both types work can be helpful for someone who is not sure what to do with their broken dentures. Keep reading to learn more!
When to choose a denture repair
A denture repair can be used for both minor and major problems, ranging from cracks to wear and tear. Common damages that occur are cracks, chips, broken artificial teeth, and normal wear and tear that breaks down the teeth or the base of the denture piece.
If a minor crack or chip occurs, the dentist may be able to perform a denture repair in office. The repair may involve the use of a dental adhesive to cover up the imperfection. However, if there is a problem with the base or the artificial teeth, the oral piece may have to undergo denture repair at a dental lab. Typically, a denture rebase or reline has to be performed by a dental technician who custom-creates such appliances every day.
A denture repair should be chosen when the cost is less than replacement. Additionally, a denture repair typically does not take as long as a complete replacement, which can be advantageous for a patient who is eager to eat, smile and speak normally again.
When is it better to undergo denture replacement?
In some cases, a denture repair may not be sufficient enough for the damage. While it is rare, a complete replacement may be recommended instead. If the damage to the denture piece is irreversible, then the dentist will recommend a replacement, which will be the responsibility of a dental lab. Additionally, if the cost for a denture repair is the same or more than a replacement, then it may be a better option to just get a replacement denture piece because it will be brand new.
In other situations, the patient may have damaged their dentures multiple times, which can cause visible imperfections to the denture piece over time. If this is the case, then it may be recommended to get a replacement denture piece so it appears natural and aesthetically pleasing.
